Spring 2 2022

Homework in Lynher.

The 10 minute tests for Year 6 and the 20 minute maths homework for year 5 are both to be completed independently.  Please can any questions answered after this time be in a different colour pen. Help with spellings for test is encouraged.
Friday 8th April
This term seems to have flown by.
First off a massive thank you for the effort and enthusiasm Lynher put into their bonnets this year. We were overwhelmed and had to give out many more prizes than normal. We had pneumatic moving parts, mechanical moving parts, transport, you name it. Thank you.
This week we finished our DT project and made our own mini marble runs. Our aim was for them to be freestanding and to move the marble as slowly as possible. We used our R and R to work together as a group and adapt our designs as we went using the iterative process.
In computing we had our final lesson to show off what we had learnt through the unit by programming a robot in our own way.
We finished our unit of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar thinking about the themes of manipulation, power and liberty.

Homework
Reading, reading and more reading plus some times tables practice.

Enjoy the holidays!
Friday 1st April
What a chilly end to a sunny week.
We had a fun wake and shake to start the day as per April Fools today.
In other areas this week we have been continuing to study Julius Caesar. We focussed on the speeches of Brutus and Marc Antony and thought about the word honourable. We enjoyed reading and listening to them in Shakespeare's words.
We finished our music unit by creating and recording a composition to represent something moving. We thought carefully about which instruments would represent different creatures in the sea and then layered them together. We listened to what we had created and then made changes before doing a final recording.
In science we were using data and graphs to see if we could spot a relationship between gestation period and life expectancy. The parrot was a big surprise with a fairly short gestation but a long life. For a lot of the others we looked at, a longer gestation period seemed to link to a longer life.

Friday 25th March
We have had a fun day taking part in a Wild Tribe day. We have sawn and whittled our own woodland mates. We used a drill to make a sign. Also we had a competition to see who could build the tallest tower and decorated a flag to go on the top.
In science yesterday we were learning about changes in old age. It is important to remember that how you treat your body now and as you grow can affect how fit and healthy you are in old age. For example if you spend a lot of time in the sun, it can affect your skin in old age.
For English we have been learning about Julius Caesar through the Shakespeare play. We have focussed on using different sentences to describe for example imagining what it would have been like to be in a crowd waiting to see him return in Rome.

Wednesday 23rd March
We were really lucky to have been given a workshop by members of the Minack Theatre today in celebration of Shakespeare week. We learnt about the history of the theatre, played some improvisation drama games, learnt about Twelfth Night and then developed and performed our own short adaptations of Twelfth Night. It was great fun, especially as we could do it in the sunshine. The class were praised by the leaders for their enthusiasm and initiative. They were fantastic.
Friday 18th March
What a beautiful end to the week. We hope the Landrake runners didn't get too muddy.
This week we began a unit on Julius Caesar in English. To begin we found out information and made notes and then wrote them up. We found out some fascinating facts - please ask us.
Wednesday was a particularly busy day. We spent the morning at Liskeard Fire Station taking part in the Lifeskills event where you learn about keeping safe in real life situations such as if you are at the railway station, electrical safety in the home, parking safely and some emergency first aid practices. The class were so well behaved and completely engaged. The thing they enjoyed the most was the challenge of how many we could squeeze into one class. Both year groups managed to squeeze themselves in in turn.
In the afternoon/evening it was tie for some of our year 6's to take to the stage and perform as part of the schools choir at Plymouth Pavilions for Songfest. They were an absolute credit to themselves and the school.
In DT this week we were exploring different materials and techniques for making bends. We used paper plates, cardboard tubes and paper templates to get our marbles to turn corners.
For PE in tennis we were learning to rally so had to think about where we sent the ball and how hard we hit it. In maypole we started to learn the Barber's Pole as well as the plait.

Year 5 maths due Thursday
Friday 11th March
We have had a very busy week.
In English we have been reading for research and thinking persuasively about whether a zoo development would be a good idea. We looked at it from different points of view and then held a debate. We voted in favour of it.
In science, we have started learning about the lifecycle of a human. This week we learnt the names of the key scientific stages and some key ideas from each.
For computing we used a mimic to program a set of traffic lights. We had to use a repeat and delay and then try and put the opposite set going at the same time.
This afternoon we all used a craft knife and had a challenge to make a free standing bridge that a marble could go across. We had to think about the joins we used and making it stable.
