Summer 1 2022

Homework support: We do not expect children to complete their homework fully independently. There will be times where they will need parental support as some mathematical concepts may not have been taught yet for example, and these will develop throughout the school year. If there is a section where you have had to support, can you please indicate this on their work. If you think something is too tricky and you feel you have had to give a higher level of support, please do not hesitate to come and speak to the class teacher, if you feel this is necessary

What an exciting and busy week we have had!

We had a special visitor, Rob Mitchell in to tell us all about how he became a super high jumper and shared lots of inspirational stories and photos with us. We took part in a circuit of activities and really enjoyed getting to meet him.

We had Edwardian day where we got to spend the school day VERY differently. We sat in rows, had to stand up to talk and we even used chalk boards instead of pencils and paper. We had to chant our times tables and copy work off the board. The children asked if we could do it again the next day, ha!

We loved using all of our skills we had been practising over the half term to help us take part in our sport's day. We all tried our best, smiled lots and loved the yummy ice lolly at the end. Thank you for everyone that came along to support us.

Have a wonderful holiday, you deserve it.

This week we have been learning about Brasilia and London and comparing the capital cities. Brasilia is hotter because it is closer to the equator and London is cooler because it is further away. But both places have lots of cafes and fast food places where people get to go and enjoy lots of yummy food. They also both have large airports and lots  of taxis ad buses as modes of transport. Brasilia is in the continent of South America and London is in the continent Europe.

In PE this week we played cricket with Ben and with Miss Gillespie we had to decide who was running what race for sports day. In Science we looked at sun safety and made some informative posters that we then used our confidence value and presented to class Lynher when they came to visit.

In Art we followed our designs and created out spring-themed clay tiles. We used the tools to etch our designs in and even added a little hole in case we want to hang them up as a decoration. We remembered that we needed to warm up the clay before it was easier to mould.

In RE we thought about where Christians go to find peace and we learnt about the church and looked at lots of photos of famous ones like St Paul's Cathedral.  We then went on an adventure around school to find places that were peaceful - the hall was very noisy and so was the shared area but the field and outdoor classroom and decking area were very peaceful with the sounds of the birds and the wind. We then created posters of where we go to find peace and we had pictures of bedrooms, beaches and lovely forested areas.

Next week is a very busy week with our special Sport's Champion visitor, Edwardian Day and Sport's day and then we can all finally relax for half-term.

Please read daily and can year one please complete their Math's homework and their spellings.

Have a wonderful weekend - keep practising using a skipping rope!

We have had a very creative week this week! We have looked at landmarks in London and looked at photos, google map images and maps to see the Shard, the Gherkin, London eye, Big ben and the houses of parliament etc. We then used paper to make models of some of these. They were very tricky but we supported each other and they looked absolutely fabulous. Some of us extended our learning further and looked at the United Kingdom in an atlas and found some of the landmarks on there too.

In Computing we have started to look at what a PowerPoint presentation is and had a very interesting discussion about how it is a bit like a book, but it is on the screen instead. It has to be in order for the information to make sense and each page is about something different. We talked about how it isn't called a 'page' but that they are called 'slides' instead.

In Art, we looked at some clay tiles that we have around the school corridors and looked at the details on them and thought about which tools would have created those effects. We then designed our own clay tiles and thought about what we would need to make it how we wanted. Our theme is Spring so we had lots of flowers, sunshine and baby animals on them. We are so excited to be making them next week.

PE has been more sports day practice.. it is fast approaching. Could you please help your child with using a skipping rope if you have one as this seems to be the trickiest part? They did so well practising the egg and spoon race and the sack race. I think everyone is very excited!

In RE we looked at how modern day Christians follow the 'good news' that Jesus brings and how a Christian charity, St George's cript, offer friendship to the friendless by offering beds to homeless people. We watched a video about an unforgiving servant too and discussed how we felt about this.

We have loved studying our class story deeper, What the Ladybird Heard and reception children have written speech bubbles about what they think the ladybird has said and year one even wrote their own mini stories about what the ladybird would heard if she was at our school. They did such an amazing job!

Please read as always, year one to complete their spelling and maths homework and please, have a wonderful weekend.

This week we have started to look at the United Kingdom and the four countries that make it up. We found out some interesting facts about each country and what their capital cities were. We also found out that the capital city is usually where the government of each country are based. For England, this is London.

In Art we moved away from using our hands as tools and instead, used real tools. We used rollers, and rolling pins and lots of different implements that made different textures and patterns on our clay. It was really interesting seeing the wonderful designs everyone had made on their clay.

In Science we went on a Spring signs hunt and had to look around the school premises for nests, birds, blossom on trees, flowers, daffodils and we even managed to spot some animals in the fields afar. We also talked again about how the temperature is warmer as we didn't have jumpers on and some of us even had shorts and dresses on. We talked about how in winter it was dark when we went to bed but now it is still light when we go to bed.

In PE we practised throwing over and under arm and discovered that throwing over arm seems to make the throw go a greater distance than doing it under arm. We also had a group rotating using the skipping ropes as we do need to start sport's day prepping too! Eeek!

In RE we have been looking at another element of the 'good news' that Jesus brings and today focused on the element of 'peace'. We thought about places that offer us comfort and quiet and discussed how a world without wars and no fighting would be good.

In PSHE we looked at friendship and what makes a good friend. We talked about some characters such as Woody and Buzz from Toy story and how they show they are good friends by helping each other and caring for one another.

We have finished our English text, 'Whistleless' and have now started 'What the Ladybird Heard'. We had some fantastic drama on Friday where the children acted out parts of the story.

In Maths we have been looking at capacity and couldn't believe that it took 107 spoonful's of water to fill a jug but it only took 3 cups! We counted to 107!

Please read, I am so proud of how well everyone is doing. You have been a huge support in this by helping to read at home regularly.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Friday 29th April 2022

Welcome back!

First of all, apologises for the blue hands on Monday - too much food colouring, but even more fun!

What a busy and learning-filled week we have had. In PSHE we looked at families and talked about how not everyone's family is the same. Some of us have a mum and dad, some have two mums, two days, or one mum and a step dad etc etc and that none of this matters as long as we feel safe, loved, happy and cared for. We drew pictures of everyone we live with and labelled who they are - of course we included our pets!

In Geography we started our new topic and compared the countryside with towns. We discovered that towns are way more noisy, way busier, have less greenery and a lot more buildings. We decided that where we are based is more in the country and that Plymouth would be a busier town.

In our new athletics PE topic we looked at running. We explored walking, jogging, running and sprinting and how they are different. We had some mini games and races and discovered that when we run or sprint and our feet are off the ground, this is called flight.

In Science we are looking at seasonal changes again and this time looked at going from winter to spring and how the days have gotten longer and the temperature has gotten warmer - hence us wearing shorts and dresses and not needing our coats.

In art we have started a clay unit and realised that our hands are actually tools and can be used to do so much with clay! We had a go at rolling it into a ball, pinching it between our fingers, making little snakes with it and squashing and smoothing it.

In RE we are beginning to look at 'What good news does Jesus bring?' and today looked at how he chose his 12 disciples and how they weren't people you would expect. Jesus was the friend of the friendless and he believes that everyone who says a genuine sorry, should be forgiven.

As always, please read and year one please complete your Math and English homework.

Have a wonderful extra long weekend and for anyone celebrating on Monday, have fun and stay safe!
