Summer 1 2022

Friday 27th May

What a fantastic end to the half term. It was so lovely to welcome back parents for a whole school sports day. The cheering really lifted the children and we are really proud of the effort they put in.
Also this week we enjoyed Edwardian day. The children took part in drill, an object lesson, sewing, handwriting with pen and ink and heard from entries to our school log book at that time.
We have a very busy second half of the summer term coming up. Year six have brought home a letter about a life-saving skills lesson we will be having at Saltash Leisure Centre on the Thursday back. We will also be sending out more information soon regarding the residential and further trips.
Have a relaxing half term.

In English we have begun a new unit based on the short film of Alma. We focussed on using the senses for description and short, snappy sentences to build tension and suspense.
For PE we were looking at the different jumps and learning how to do them. For example in long jump, you jump with one foot and land with two.
Year 6 enthusiastically took up the opportunity to take part in Bikeability this week. They learnt many rules for the road including hand gestures and the different positions you should take up.
This afternoon in science we have been ordering and comparing materials based on their properties and did tests to see if objects were transparent, flexible, permeable, hard and magnetic.

Friday 13th May
We have had a busy week.
Year 6 were fantastic through the SATs and thank you all for being here on time all week.
Year 5 were busy on a geography topic learning about the wonders of the world. They are very awe-inspiring.
Also this week we have been doing an art unit. We have studied different North American artists and thought about their inspiration and used some of their work to inspire ours. Please see some abstract painting we did below in the style of Helen Frankenthaler who liked to paint her canvases on the floor.
We also completed our music appreciation unit where we listened and appraised various hip hop tracks, thinking about what made them hip hop and what we liked/ didn't like about them. We also compared some of them in a live version compared to a recorded. We liked the audience participation involved with Run DMC.

The Royal Air Force people came in and taught us new STEM skills. This stood for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We built and created robots which we programmed to follow routes and pick things up. They had a colour sensor which meant the robot would start a function if it saw the colour. There was a sensor in the button which responded to hard or soft presses. We had to program this on the IPad.
In PE we did throwing skills. We threw javelins and rounders balls. We were able to get the rounders balls the furthest although the wind blowing the javelins might have had something to do with it.
For maths we have been linking coordinates to symmetry and writing where a reflected shape would be.

In maths we have been looking at angles. We know that a straight line is 180 degrees and a full turn is 360 degrees.
In PE we were doing sprinting to help us with sports day coming up soon.
For Geography we were learning about different areas in North and South America, for example the population, temperature and time zones.
In English we have been using dogs such as Inference Iggy to focus on different aspects of comprehension.
