Friday 20th May
Today we did some drama in English based on how we think the story 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' would end. We all made some great predictions based on what we already know.
In PE this week we continued to work on our Tennis skills.
In computing this week we had a go at using spellcheck, we had to correct a piece of text. We learnt that spell check is very useful but shouldn’t be the only tool used. Spell check didn’t pick up on the incorrect homophones used or the names of some people/places even though they were correct.
We learnt about being a global citizen in PSHE and reflected on what ‘fair trade’ means and why this is important.
In RE we thought about what Christians might believe the world would be like if the Pentecost didn’t happen. Class Tamar came up with some really interesting points.
We learnt more about minims, minim rests, crotchets and crotchet rests in Music, as well as learning how to play and read the notes C through to G on the glockenspiel. In pairs we composed our own piece for to play on the glockenspiel, making sure that we recorded the notes carefully.
For Geography this week we looked at the different land use in Whitby and compared this to our local area. We noticed that the housing is more central and agriculture is on the outside.

Friday 13th May
In English this week we have started reading ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. We have really enjoyed the story so far and can’t wait to find out what happens next on Monday! We have worked hard at using fronted adverbials to describe what is happening in the woods.
We learnt about the artist Rembrandt this week and had a go at drawing with rubbers, influenced by Rembrandt’s use of tone. We shaded our entire page and the used the rubbers to add the light!
In PE this week we worked on our relay skills. We did a shuttle race relay and practised making sure that we held the baton at the base and that we didn’t stop running in order to pass the baton on, we slowed down slightly as our opponent showed that they were ready.
For mental health week we learnt about a ‘Growth Mind Set’. We had a go at turning negative ‘fixed mind set’ statements into positive ‘growth mind set’ statements. We are going to make sure that we apply this thinking in and outside of school.
For Geography this week we compared the physical features of Whitby to where we live. We were surprised t to discover that Whitby has a Whale Bone Arch – we are excited to research a bit more about this next week!
We finished the week learning how to use different types of bullet points in Word and reflected on when we might need these.

Welcome back to the Summer term! This week we worked on some riddle poems in English using the video ‘treasure’ to help inspire us. Some of us even made our riddles rhyme!
We started our Electricity unit this week in Science. We looked at different household appliances that work with mains or battery electricity and those appliances that didn’t need electricity at all. We demonstrated our understanding by putting each appliance into a Venn diagram.
We are working on Word Processing in Computing this half term. This week, we had a go at putting images into word. We learnt how to make sure that it was easy to move these images around the page in order to make a perfect poster later in the unit.
In PE we learnt the key techniques for sprinting. We made sure that we kept our eyes focussed in front of us; kept our arms bent and moving in opposition to the legs; and when we made contact with the ground it was with the front of our foot.
We started our new Geography unit this week learning all about Whitby! By the end of the lesson we were able to identify where in the UK Whitby is located, what county Whitby is in (North Yorkshire) and how far away it was to where we live. We also identified what features Whitby has and looked at the similarities and differences compared to where we live.
In RE this week we learnt about the story of the day of the Pentecost. We reflected on the feelings and emotions of the disciples and displayed this on an emotions graph.
In Art this term we will be learning all about different European artists. Today we learnt about Anselm Kiefer. Most of Anselm Kiefer’s art is inspired by the building he saw when he grew up in Germany after WW2. The children had a go at sketching an observational drawing of one of his pieces. Class Tamar were great at reflecting on how Kiefer’s art made them feel and why.
We finished the week with some French. We recapped on how we count to 10 and then learnt how to tell the time - We learnt o’clock and half past today.
