Spring 1 2023

Friday 10th February

This week we made the final product of our pencil cases. It was nice seeing the end results and when we were doing our evaluation we thought about what we were proud of.
We completed our music unit by performing the songs we have learnt to class Cremyll. They said we were 'amazing'.
In English we edited and then wrote the best version of our poem in the style of one of the ones we have read over the last couple of weeks. It was fun being as imaginative as you wanted while using the style of someone else.
For PE we were working on our fitness in one session including press ups and plank crawls. In our other PE lesson we performed the dance that we have been creating through the unit.

In English we have been performing. We used confidence and E for L and really enjoyed ourselves. We have looked at some Michael Rosen poems and particularly enjoyed 'youngest in our house'.
In computing we made a comic strip showing one of the different things we have looked at during our online safety unit. We had to explain how we could solve the problem at the end.
In DT we have been making our pencil cases. We have been sewing them together and adding details as well as buttons and elastic.
For geography we were learning about grid references. We had to use coordinates to crack a code which was really fun. We also enjoyed looking at ordnance survey maps.

This week we have really enjoyed beginning our poetry unit. We have read two poems by Charles Causley an have then enjoyed writing stanzas in a similar style and trying to imagine what would happen next using evidence from the text.
Yesterday we watched a live lesson from scientists who work with very small things and very big things. We learnt the prefixes for numbers that had 27 zeros! These were invented by scientists from England and will be used worldwide. We listened to what inspired them to become scientists.
Year 6 have continued their enthusiasm for algebra and year 5 have been working hard on decimals including thousandths.
This afternoon it was fun seeing the fill a jar being completed. We all went home with something.

We created a template for our pencil case in DT. We had to measure carefully and check it worked ready for cutting it out of felt next time. Then we made step by step instructions to help us when we come to make it.
In French we have been learning our pronouns and used them to say where people are. We had to use our confidence as we were saying it not writing it.
For PE we were doing badminton and we did a match in our house teams. We also did an activity where we tried to keep a rally going and the shuttlecock wasn't allowed to touch the floor.
In English we wrote some more of the story. To help us with this we made storyboards, told the story to each other making sure we kept them interested and also looked at direct and reported speech.

In PE we did badminton, learning two different ways to hit the shuttlecock - underarm and overarm.
In science we were learning the names and facts about the planets in our solar system. Saturn's rings are made of ice and rock.
In English we have been focussing on characters and how they are feeling. We looked for evidence to show their feelings had changed through the piece.
In maths year 5 began division today using the bus stop method. It wasn't as scary as we thought.
