Spring 2 2023

Friday 31st March
What an end to the term. A big shout out to the confidence of the class for their performance in the assembly - particularly the soloists and backing singers as well as all of those who got their air guitars out.
Also this week we composed, performed and evaluated our interpretation of Mars in music. We included a coda, march, ostinatos and a crescendo.
We also planned, wrote and edited our newspaper report about Tim Peake's return to Earth.
In maths year 6 began to look at pie charts and how they can show information and year 5 were calculating angles around a point and on a straight line.

We hope you all have a good break.

Friday 24th March
Yesterday we had a workshop with members of the Minack theatre. We acted out a shortened form of a Shakespeare play and played lots of fun games.
In PE we put all of the hockey skills we have learnt into a match. We learnt to find space and this sometimes meant going backwards to go forwards. We also took part in a football match and played football tennis where you had to stop the ball from bouncing twice with no hands allowed.
For maths in year 6 we have been finding volume by counting cubes, it was fun and quite easy but tricky to draw cubes on isometric paper. We enjoyed using cubes to work things out practically.
In music we were layering ostinatos and pulse as we start to create our own piece about Mars. We also added in crescendos for the marching.
We have enjoyed picking and learning a new song to share with the parents. We chose one linked to positivity.

We have used our confidence this week to complete our Spring assessments. In geography we completed our unit and wrote a report about how and why we need and use maps.
On Wednesday year 5 went to Junior Life Skills and learnt CPR, how to stay safe near a railway and how to stay safe at the beach.
On Thursday we had a clay workshop and with Robin's help, we manipulated clay to our desired shapes and decorated them with nature.
Today we had a comic relief quiz and got ready for cake sale!

Friday 10th March
We have had a busy week. We enjoyed our online session with primary futures where we learnt about some jobs we could aspire to in the future.
On Wednesday we had a great time on our trip to the Devonport Market Hall for our dome cinema experience. We learnt more about our space topic - particularly the ISS with Tim Peake and were amazed at how the cinema worked with the picture all around us.
In Science we learnt about the movement of the Earth and how it causes day and night, even though it looks as though and we speak it as if the Sun goes up and down.
In English we have been writing a diary as if we were Tim Peake going on his mission to the ISS. We found out lots of interesting facts about how he lived up there. We were particularly fascinated by the capsule he and two other astronauts returned to Earth in.

Friday 3rd March
In English we wrote our explanation of a pudding machine for Tim Peake to use in space. We had all sorts of gadgets and gizmos.
For music we were learning ostinatos and building them to a crescendo linked to Mars by Holst.
In maths year 5 have been looking at graphs and tables while year 6 have been problem solving with percentages. Both groups have used lots of E for L.
For World Book day we played a story telling version of consequences with different sentence starters. We had lots of interesting stories. We watched a live video of David Walliams and got to see a sneak peak of his new book Robodog. We also played twenty questions for people to guess which book character we were thinking of. We have also designed book tokens which we can enter into a competition if they come back signed by a parent.
In science we did a live lesson with Time Peake who we have also been looking at in English about the satellite launch. We learnt that there are lots of new jobs in the space industry and there are lots of opportunities to aim for.

Friday 24th February

It has been a lovely welcome back to class after half term. We have been busy this week and started our new topic in English on space, focusing on Tim Peak. We have looked at the differences between instructional text and explanation text by discussing their features. Today we planned how a machine would work to prepare, cook and serve a meal to Tim on the ISS!

In French we were recapping counting and then looked at shapes. In RE we started our new unit on Judaism and looked at the diversity within the religion, focusing on Orthodox and Reform Jews. In PE we have started our football and hockey units. We became agony aunts in PSHE and offered others advice on how to keep themselves healthy.
