Summer Term 2 2023

Week ending 21 July 2023

A busy half term and the end of the school year. A fantastic week spent at Mount Edgcumbe digging like archaeologists, making coins and even visiting Drakes Island.
Today the last day of term, Sam Copeland, the author of 'Charlie morphs into a Mammoth' read the epilogue of his book and the children got to ask him questions. The end of a brilliant year.

Please keep reading over the summer and the log in to Times Tables Rock Stars is in your child's reading record book.

Thank you from all of the Tamar team

Weekending 7th July 2023

In maths we have been looking at data and pictograms. A pictogram is a picture that represents a number on a graph. We have also been looking at tally charts where you make the ‘gate’ for 5 votes. In science we made posters about fossils and how they are formed. In PE we carried with our tennis skills batting the ball to each other and sandwich catches. We had a day of Geography on Thursday where we looked at the Mediterranean. We watched a clip on what it is like there, and we then listed some reasons why tourists might go there. In the afternoon we looked at the climate and weather and then researched our own Mediterranean country. Within RE, we looked at the ‘Golden Rule’ and how many religions have this. We also started exploring Scratch and making the Sprite move in Computing as well as debugging.

Today the class found out that, hopefully, Sam Copeland, the author of ‘Charlie Morphs into a Mammoth’ is going to read the last part of the book by video call on the last day of term.

Enjoy the weekend,

Class Tamar.

Weekending 30th June 2023

We have done lots of tests this week and we finished the online trials today. We planned and wrote a story about, ‘The Magic Piano’ which included lots of the features we have been learning about.

In science we made cup and string phones and we discovered that the string had to be kept taut and then we did Chinese Whispers. It was hard because of the wind. In PE we were learning about we did tennis doing sandwich catching and batting the ball to each other. Also, we did rounders. We created sound effects to a story in music.

On Friday we had a Zoom call about possible jobs in our future. We heard from a deck officer who was on a ship in the Indian Ocean, a maritime safety regulator and a sub sea engineer.

Enjoy the weekend,

Class Tamar.

Porthpean update 19:22 Tuesday 20th June 2023

The children and adults have just started the evening activities of a silent disco.

We arrived this morning and after going through the safety features we  went straight to the highwire activities. After going through the safety and harnesses as well as helmets we started! Starting with the ladder the children were challenged to climb the 10 metres up the 'wobbly ladder' and then 'fly' back down. The other group had a series of obstacles on the climb up the 10 metres and crossing ropes and a horizontal 'wobbly ladder'. We then sorted out the tents and where children were sleeping followed by lunch.
After lunch we continued on the highwire course with the children again being split into 2 groups. One group did the leap of faith where after climbing 5 metres up they had to jump into thin air and try and hit a suspended buoy, a real challenge to their confidence!! Group 2 were on the zip wire.
A brief time in tents and some free time we then had our tea before starting our evening activities at 19:00.
We are all safe and having a wonderful time.

Weekending 16th June 2023

Another busy week and the class is really excited about going to Porthpean.

In maths both year groups have been continuing with shape, finding out about quadrilaterals and polygons. We also found out the name of nine and ten sided shapes. Within English we have continued information texts and have planned our posters on ‘Climate Change’ including; bullet points, headings, sub headings, diagrams and explanations.

In science we found out about the water cycle as how we might separate salt, sand and water. French was fun, finding out about drinks and food and ordering from a tea shop. We all had a fantastic day on Friday after designing kites we made them. We finally tested them on the field!!

A letter has gone home about the Porthpean itinerary today and the kit list can be found below in the link.

Enjoy the weekend,

Class Tamar.

Weekending 9th June 2023

Mrs Green was teaching our class for the first part of the week.

We started our new English topic on climate change. We labelled the features of the information text with post its for example, diagrams and subheadings. We also found out a bit about Greta Thunberg and put sentences under different subheadings.  We also wrote sentences with relative clauses. In maths we have been learning about angles including, acute (smaller than a right angle) and obtuse  (greater than a right angle).

In PE we continue to develop our throwing and catching skills. We learnt about states of matter including evaporation, condensation, heating and cooling. In geography we thought about the Mediterranean and what it might be like.

Enjoy your weekend!

Weekending 14th  July 2023

A busy end to the week finishing our topics. We have looked at famous Christians and found out about Johannes Gutenburg and his printing press. Before the printing press most people could not read as there were no books. It was revolutionary. We then looked at ‘sadaqah’ the Islamic giving voluntarily, whether money or time. We then thought how we might be generous. Within computing we used Scratch to get the Sprite around a given course, it was quite difficult and we kept having to debug. Art, was all Friday morning and we used a variety of materials to make nests including willow and flax.

We are looking forward to the archaeology next week!

Enjoy the weekend,

Class Tamar.
